My name is Gregory J. De Cuir and I am a proud member of the brown and tan branch of two of Louisiana's founding families, Guillory and De Cuir! The branch known for its Creole culture!
When I was a young boy growing up in Los Angeles I often wondered why my mother was speaking a different language on the telephone. When I asked her, she told me the language was French and that was the language she grew up knowing. Whenever she was conversing with her brothers, sisters or her parents on the phone, the language was in French.
As time went on, I learned more about my father and mother's life as children and then adults in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish. This interest somewhat waned over the years until I was married with my own family. I then started gathering more information about my ancestry.
Over the years I have learned a great deal about my ancestors. In 2013, my wife and I journeyed to France and Belgium where we visited one of my ancestor's hometown. In 2015, I traveled to Senegal and toured Goree Island's slave quarters. My African ancestry most likely was from the Senegambia Region. I decided to start this blog to communicate the stories about some of these people. I hope to make this narrative both interesting and informative for family members and also for the general public. We will discuss not only family members but history, culture, slavery and a few other topics. I welcome you to my blog and hope you continually come back and read the posts!
